Sunset over Navarino Bay:
we had to wait for several days of overcast weather to pass to get a clear sunset photo, looking out across the bay from our camp. Sphacteria Island enclosing the bay is on the left; the sun is setting over the headland above Voidokilia Bay

Methoni Castle: built in the 13th century by the Venetians to protect their trading routes to the middle east. The Turks were even more barbarous in their occupation until finally expelled in 1828 with Greek independence. Today, after such a bloody history, Methoni sits peacefully on its rocky outcrop, surrounded on 3 sides by sea

Nestor's Palace: preserved in the sandy Messinian soil, the Mycenaean palace is seen today remarkably as it was after invaders destroyed it by fire around 1,200 BC. This is the huge central hearth in the royal throne room where state visitors were received

Voidokilia Bay: viewed from the craggy headland over which the sun is setting in photo 1. The sea really is as blue, and the sand as white, as it appears on the photo. The bay is thought to be the site of the harbour from which Nestor sailed to join the Greek expedition against Troy
