Meteora, Varlaam Monastery: this is one of the rocky monoliths of Meteora which is topped by a monastery, built originally in the 14th century by monks seeking seclusion from the secular world. Ironically, the numbers of tourists today totally denies that very seclusion that the founding hermits were seeking. |
