Camp Triglav in the Upper Trenta valley: we spent 3 good days here surrounded by high peaks, where the Vršič Pass descends near the source of the river Soča. In the evening, the setting sun caused the 4,000 headwall of the valley to glow a fluorescent orange

War cemetery:  this  WW I cemetery, high up the Koritnica valley, contained the graves of 900 Austrian soldiers killed on Mt Rombon. Simple black iron crosses marked each grave, some bearing the name(s) - multiple graves - of those buried there; others were forlornly labelled 'unbekannt' - unknown

River Soča:  we followed the Soča from its source high in Triglav National Park, along its valley from Bovec to Tolmin. The river flows briskly through dramatic gorges, and it really is this spectacular turquoise colour. The valley now brings much needed tourist income from adventure sports along the river

Franja Partisan Hospital: a clandestine hospital set up during WW II to treat wounded partisans, Franja was hidden in the steep-sided Pasica Ravine. The 13 camouflaged huts had space for 120 wounded, and included an operating hut and small X-ray machine

Škocjan Cave:  the River Reka flowing through the cave has carved out over the millennia a 300m long, 60m wide and 100m high subterranean gorge - a most amazing and fearful sight. Here the cave emerges into another, now collapsed, Karst cave some 100m deep Lipica Riding School: the stud farm was founded in 1580 to provide stylish horses for the Austrian Habsburg court's royal stables. The elegant white Lipizzaner horses' performances now are a show-piece of the Slovenian Republic
