DANISH CAMPSITES - INTERACTIVE MAP:

The interactive map (right) gives the outline location of all 30 campsites or stellplads used by us during our summer 2019 travels around Denmark

Each campsite links to the chart below which gives details of:

  • campsite or stellplads name
  • address, phone number and GPS co-ordinates
  • date of our 2019 stay
  • cost per night including
  • campsite features together with our comments
  • assessment-rating

Comments given relate purely to the dates of our stay.
Prices per night cover camper pitch, 2 adults and electricity, and are quoted in
Danish Kroner (DKK); the 2019 rate of exchange is 8.68 DKK to £ pound sterling

Campsites have been rated on a scale  +5 (excellent) through to -5 (dreadful)

We have tried to be as objective and consistent as possible, basing our assessment on standards specifically applicable to Scandinavia, over an amalgamation of the following criteria:

  • attitudes shown by owners or staff, the welcome we received, and standards of hospitality and helpfulness
  • location and setting
  • standard of facilities (WC/showers, kitchen/wash-up, wi-fi, washing/drying machine)
  • price and value for money

Regrettably so many Danish campsites have now become no-go areas: oppressively over-crowded and over-noisy with holiday-makers, crammed full of static caravans giving a depressingly soulless, alien atmosphere, often with unwelcoming owners and mediocre facilities, and worst of all shockingly over-priced even out of season. This now poses a real dilemma for camping in Denmark. But fortunately there are also many straightforward, small camping places at farm/B&Bs, or coastal marinas and fishing harbours, called stellplads in Danish (like the German stellplatz). As a result, we changed our long-established practice of staying at conventional campsites, and sought out such stellplads as peaceful places to camp, with charactersome settings full of interest, and exceptionally good value, as our ratings show.

222 DKK Well-appointed if expensive site, totally spoilt by rudely offensive and ill-mannered owners
Welcome:  initially helpful welcome from owner's husband, but when we raised issue of wholly inconvenient peak time hour long WCs/showers closure (10-20~11-30am) for cleaning to suit staffs' convenience but wholly inconvenient for paying guests, owners turned offensively rude and demanded we leave immediately, becoming increasingly rude and ill-mannered as we tried to point out their offensive attitude towards paying guests
Setting:  site located in north of Limfjord island of Fur close to moler cliffs. Camping areas terraced in tiers up grassy hill-side; busy with holiday-makers with all the potential for noise
Facilities:  modern integrated WC/shower bathrooms, and well-appointed kitchen/wash-up/common room; but all WC/showers closed at peak demand time (10-20~11-30am) to suit staff/ management convenience; site-wide wi-fi free for 1 guest for 1 day, more for 24 DKK/day; expensive on-site restaurant
Price:  expensive at 222 DKK

Welcome:  delightfully hospitable welcome from long-standing owner Henny Mortensen

Welcome:  friendly and hospitable welcome from helpful owner, clearly a man of our values, but ....
Setting:
  horrendous!!! entire camping area now a metropolis of statics, sardine-packed row-upon-row of statics, with scarcely any space for visitors;

238 DKK Enormous campsite at Fyns Hoved, full of statics, monopolistically over-priced, and with mediocre facilities; typical of the current unacceptable trend of Danish campsites
Welcome:  none at all! out of season, reception locked on arrival; brusque, surly response to phone call telling us to camp and pay in morning; when we called to pay when the owners deigned to open, treated by owner with off-hand, take-it-or-leave-it attitude
Setting:  enormous and soulless camping areas full of massed statics, but with space for visitors
Facilities
:  mediocre facilities with gloomily old fashioned WC/showers and basic kitchen/wash-up; assume there was limited wi-fi at reception but we didn't bother to ask, it was all so grim!

SCANDINAVIAN CAMPING CARD (CAMPING KEY EUROPE)

Camping Key Europe, Scandinavian Camping Card (SCC) (see left) issued by any of the Scandinavian national camping associations is an essential accompaniment to camping trips anywhere in Scandinavia, and is required by many campsites. The card provides a degree of camping insurance, and you can use it to negotiate a discount at many campsites. It is now only offered as a mobile phone download rather than as a plastic card.

The card can be obtained in advance from: Camping Card Europe and costs around £16; you can also buy it directly from Scandinavian campsites
