River Ljubljanica:  the river meanders gently though the charming central area of the city, leading along Plečnik's beautifully designed embankment walks, lined with tempting street cafés

St Nikolaj Cathedral:  for those who like Baroque architecture, Ljubljana is the place to be. Within the compact central area, there are a number of such churches, a legacy of the period of Slovenia being a province of the Austrian Habsburg empire

Prešeren trg and the Triple Bridge Plečnik enhanced the 1842 central section of the bridge with side spans, to give what must be one of Europe's most elegant bridges. Across the river is Prešeren Square, very much the social centre of the town

Vodnikov market:  doing what we most like doing - pottering around the local market. Around the Cathedral, there are fish and meat markets, as well as the usual fruit and veg markets. All very pleasurable, but sorting out the Tolars to pay was a challenge
